Pittsburgh Panthers have lost a key commitment in the 2027 class as WR Alex Fontenot has flipped to the Maryland Terrapins.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Fontenot initially committed to the Pittsburgh Panthers on May 30 during his official visit.
He selected Pitt over other Power Four offers, including Maryland and West Virginia.
This loss is significant for the Panthers, who were looking to take three receivers in the 2027 class.
With Fontenot out of the picture, Pitt is left with three-star receivers Jacob Thomas, Ajavion Willis, and Jaden Baldwin.
The Panthers will face the Miami (OH) RedHawks on September 5, 2026, in their next game.
Fontenot's decision to flip to Maryland is the second time in as many cycles that Pitt has lost a commit to the Terrapins.
Former three-star interior lineman Day'jon Moore also made the switch in the 2026 class.
Pitt was invested in Fontenot, who helped Alexandria to a 10-3 season with 62 receptions for 1,047 yards and 17 touchdowns.
The Rivals Industry Ranking places Fontenot as the No. 122 wide receiver in the 2027 cycle.
Jacob Thomas tells Pittsburgh Sports Now that he did not take any other official visits after planning to visit Georgia Tech and UCF.
He cancelled both visits, solidifying his commitment to the Panthers.
The loss of Fontenot will be a challenge for the Panthers' recruiting efforts, but they remain focused on building a strong 2027 class.
